When Is the Best Time to Drink Water?

Publisher: Ideana · Published: · 5 min read

There is no evidence for a single “ideal” hour to drink water. What matters most is regularity through the whole day. Good times to use as anchors are the morning, meals, work breaks, the hours around exercise and a calm evening.

In the morning

After a night without drinking it is natural to have a drink — a good moment for your first glass and a way to build a ritual. There is no evidence, however, that water on an empty stomach has special “cleansing” properties. What counts is that the first sip of the day helps you remember the next ones.

With meals

Drinking water with food is safe and convenient for many people. A popular myth says water “dilutes digestive juices” — there is no good evidence it harms healthy people. Water before a meal is sometimes used as a dieting aid, although effects tend to be small (see Does Drinking Water Help With Weight Loss?).

At work and through the day

This is usually when it is easiest to forget. A bottle on your desk, a sip at every break and a few reminders set to natural pauses all help. Ready-made ideas: How to Remember to Drink Water.

Before and after physical activity

Be hydrated before exercise, drink in sips during it, usually to thirst, and replace fluids afterwards. Details and tips: How Much Water Should You Drink During Exercise?.

In the evening

You can drink normally in the evening, but if you wake at night to use the toilet, move more of your fluids to earlier in the day and limit large amounts in the 1–2 hours before bed. If night-time urination is frequent and bothersome, talk to a doctor.

Common myths about timing

  • “You must drink two glasses immediately after waking.” No evidence of a special benefit.
  • “Lemon water on an empty stomach detoxes the body.” Your kidneys and liver do the cleansing; there is no evidence for a “detox” effect.
  • “You must not drink with meals.” There is no evidence that it harms.
  • “Cold water burns fat.” The energy effect is negligible.

How to build a steady routine

Choose 3–5 fixed points in your day (for example on waking, at lunch, in the afternoon break, when you get home) and attach a glass or a few sips to each. In the WODA app you can set reminders for those times and log the water you drink. How much in total: How Much Water Should You Drink Per Day?.
