How to Choose a Water Reminder App for iPhone

Publisher: Ideana · Published: · 6 min read

A good water reminder app is one you will actually use: reminders that fit your day, fast logging of the water you drink, clear progress and transparent privacy and pricing. Below is a checklist. Note: WODA is our own app, so we describe it separately and do not compare it with other apps.

What to look for

  1. Reminders. Can you adjust the times and frequency? Ideally you stay in control and do not get notifications at night or in meetings.
  2. Fast logging. Adding the water you drank should take a few taps, or you will stop doing it.
  3. Goal and progress. The ability to set your own daily goal and a clear view of progress.
  4. Simplicity. Fewer screens means a better chance you keep using it.
  5. Privacy. Is an account required? Where is data stored — on the device or in the cloud? Are there ads or tracking?
  6. Pricing model. Free, ad-supported or subscription — and exactly what the premium version includes.
  7. iPhone compatibility. The required iOS version is shown on the app’s App Store page.
  8. Accessibility. Readable type and support for the system’s accessibility features.

Privacy — what to check

An app’s App Store page includes privacy labels in which the developer declares what data it collects and whether it is linked to you. Read them before installing. Notice whether the app requires an account and whether your drinking data stays on your device.

Free versus premium

Many apps offer a free basic version and optional paid features. Check which features are available without paying, whether a subscription renews automatically, and how to cancel it (in your Apple account settings). Do not pay for features you do not need.

How to test an app in three days

  • day 1: set your goal and reminders, log a few portions,
  • day 2: see whether the reminders match your rhythm and whether you ignore them,
  • day 3: judge whether logging is fast enough for you and whether you want to come back to the app.

What we can confirm about WODA

We describe only what we know about our own app:

  • you set your own daily water goal,
  • you log the water you drink quickly,
  • you can turn on reminders (local iOS notifications) and see your daily progress,
  • you do not need an account — your goal, logs and settings are stored on your device,
  • there are no ads in the app,
  • the basic version is free, and the optional Woda Plus costs PLN 9.99 as an Apple subscription.

Check the system requirements on the app’s App Store page. WODA is not a medical device and is not meant to diagnose dehydration. More about the app on the WODA page.

An app is only a tool

You do not need an app to drink water — a bottle on your desk works too. An app is useful if you like seeing progress and need reminders. More ideas: How to Remember to Drink Water, and how much to drink: How Much Water Should You Drink Per Day?.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an app to drink more water?

No. An app is one tool — helpful if you like logs and reminders. A bottle in sight and fixed routines work too.

Do I need an account for a water-tracking app?

It depends on the app. Check its App Store page and privacy labels. WODA does not require an account.

Will an app replace a doctor’s advice?

No. Hydration apps help build a habit and do not diagnose conditions.
